I am the Owner and Manager here at Small Kauri. Before opening here in 2002, I had built up an extensive knowledge of early childhood through completing a Diploma at North Shore Teachers College, NZ Diploma through the Free Kindergarten Union and Bachelor of Education (Teaching).
I have over 40 years of experience in ECE including lecturing at MIT, as well as raising four of my own children and being a part of Playcentre.
I am on the OMEP Auckland Chapter Committee.

When my oldest was younger she attended kindergarten, in this time I began my Early Childhood studies. During my studies I worked in a kindergarten. I found my place here at Small Kauri in 2007 and haven't looked back.

I am originally from Malaysia, I moved to New Zealand in 2003 and began my study at Unitec for 4 years. I have a Diploma in Teaching (ECE) and a Bachelor of Education (ECE), I started teaching here at Small Kauri in 2007. I am deaf but I can lip read and sign. I bring an additional dynamic to the team in supporting the learning and understanding of quality communication.

While training I had work experience at a Kindergarten, as well as working alongside refugee families at The Carp; White Family Centre attached to Selwyn College. Before coming to Small Kauri I was part of more structured and age divided Early Childhood Centres. Coming to Small Kauri has solidified my thinking that mixed ages settings should be the direction of the future. I love the opportunities for learning that are supported by the family orientated setting at Small Kauri

Before working in Early Childhood I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts at Elam closely followed by a Graduate Diploma in Teaching at Secondary level. However once I started working at Small Kauri I never wanted to leave and have since completed my Graduate Diploma in Teaching in Early Childhood Education. I have been at Small Kauri since 2010 and over the years have been challenged and grown as a teacher. I am passionate about what we do and am so proud to be a part of such an amazing and diverse team. I am also a proud mum of three boys who attended Small Kauri.

Support Staff

 Ely (Teachers Assistant)
I am from Chile originally and I moved to New Zealand with my family in 2006.
I have been a Teachers Assistant here at Small Kauri since I arrived;. With the support of my cousin Rosy, and of Linda and the team here, I have been able to develop my language and become a real asset to the team. I now work on the floor supporting the teachers. I also have a nursing certificate from Chile and experience as a nurse for fourteen years, which along side of our first aid certificate allows me to help with first aid and illness care of children within the centre. I value the importance of building relationships with the children, and learning their cues and needs to be able to assist the Teachers here at Small Kauri.

 Nicky (Consultant)
Nicky had been teaching at Small Kauri between  2006 to 2021 and now is a Consultant        providing
Professional Practice and Registration services for our teaching team.

Providing an environment to support learning

Our environment for learning is our grounds and building with open plan layout and extensive learning equipment provided, and it is also our people in the environment that achieve quality education of children.

We have given careful consideration to the composition of children at Small Kauri and teacher requirements.

We believe that just as a family is comprised of different age groups, our centre group should comprise children of varied age groups.   Young children are provided a model by the older children to learn from (language, how to engage with the equipment). This encourages younger children to achieve. The older children learn about caring and supporting younger children.  They learn empathy and build positive self-esteem through seeing themselves as more able and as helpers.

All the Teachers at Small Kauri hold University Degrees or Post Graduate Diplomas in Early Childhood Teaching . They are supported by each other in gaining increased professional knowledge and skill on a weekly basis through readings and discussions and on other occasions they attend external Professional Development.

The Ministry of Education funds pay for 4  Qualified & Registered Teachers and 1 untrained assistant daily, this is a ratio of 1 adult to 4 children under 2 years age and 1 Teacher to 10 children over 2 years.

Small Kauri usually provides a minimum of 6 or 7 Qualified & Registered Teachers and 1 unqualified assistant each day the centre is open.

Small Kauri provides the high number of Qualified & Registered Teachers to enable quality interactions with children sometimes individually but usually in small groups so that each child’s learning is supported. Click here to meet your Teachers.

Feel welcome to visit and meet the team and observe how the children enjoy learning at Small Kauri.
